Nicholas Anthony Casey was a 22-year-old sergeant from Canton, Ohio. He served with the Headquarters and Support Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Military records indicate his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On October 27, 2008, Casey was killed in Baghlan province, Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device while on patrol.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2008, the conflict was characterized by a significant increase in insurgent use of IEDs against coalition forces and a focus on counterinsurgency operations in provinces like Baghlan.
