Corporal Jacob Russell Carver, 20, of Freeman, Missouri, was a U.S. Army infantryman. He died on November 13, 2010, in Zhari District, Afghanistan, from hostile action.

Their Story

Jacob Russell Carver was born in Freeman, Missouri, a small town near Kansas City. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a corporal in Company B, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, part of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

On November 13, 2010, Carver was killed in the Zhari District of Kandahar province, a region known as a Taliban stronghold. The U.S. Department of Defense stated his death resulted from hostile action. According to contemporaneous reporting, his unit was engaged in clearing operations as part of a larger coalition offensive in the district.

Carver's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, coalition forces, including the 101st Airborne Division, were conducting a major push in Kandahar province, an area of intense insurgent activity.

His body was returned to Missouri. A funeral service was held at the Freeman High School gymnasium, where he was remembered by family and community members. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.

Carver is memorialized on a plaque at Freeman High School and on the Fallen Heroes Memorial in Raymore, Missouri. His name is inscribed on Panel 3W, Row 111 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.
