Their Story
Jacob Charles Carroll was a 20-year-old soldier from Clemmons, North Carolina. He served as a Specialist in the United States Army, assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
On November 13, 2010, Carroll was killed while conducting a dismounted patrol in the Zhari District of Kandahar province, a region known for its dense agricultural terrain and insurgent activity. Zhari District, west of Kandahar city, was a frequent site of these engagements.
Following his death, Carroll's body was returned to North Carolina. A funeral service was held at Clemmons United Methodist Church. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other military honors.
He is remembered by family and in local news reports as a dedicated soldier who enjoyed outdoor activities. He was survived by his parents and siblings. His name is inscribed on a veterans memorial in his hometown.
