Master Sergeant Scott Michael Carney, 37, of Des Moines, Iowa, was a soldier with the Iowa Army National Guard. He was killed in action in Herat province, Afghanistan, on August 24, 2007.

Their Story

Scott Michael Carney was a 37-year-old Master Sergeant from Des Moines, Iowa. He served with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division of the Iowa Army National Guard, which was based in Boone.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Carney died on August 24, 2007, in Herat province, western Afghanistan. The official casualty report stated he was killed by enemy small-arms fire while on patrol.

Carney's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2007, the conflict saw intense fighting as international and Afghan forces engaged Taliban and other insurgent groups across the country, including in western provinces like Herat.

Following his death, Carney was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His funeral was held at the Iowa State Veterans Cemetery in Adel. The Iowa National Guard publicly confirmed his death and expressed condolences to his family.

Master Sergeant Carney is remembered on memorials for fallen Iowa National Guard soldiers. His name is inscribed on the Iowa Veterans Memorial and is included in the National Guard's official roll of honor for the state.
