Their Story
Dustin Lee Canham was a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps. He was from Lake Stevens, Washington, and was assigned to Headquarters and Service Company, 6th Engineer Support Battalion, part of the 4th Marine Logistics Group based in Portland, Oregon. According to unit designations, he was deployed under the II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).
On March 23, 2008, Canham died at Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti. The U.S. Marine Corps reported his death as resulting from a non-hostile gunshot wound, which it stated was self-inflicted. The incident was under investigation at the time.
Canham's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001. The Horn of Africa, including Djibouti, was a theater within this broader conflict, focused on counter-terrorism operations and regional stability.
Following his death, his body was returned to the United States. A memorial service was held in his hometown of Lake Stevens, Washington, where he was remembered by family, friends, and fellow Marines.
