Lance Corporal Christopher Labiano Camero, 19, of Kailua Kona, Hawaii, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on July 12, 2011.
Their Story
Christopher Labiano Camero was born and raised in Kailua Kona on the island of Hawaii. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned as a lance corporal to the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, part of Regimental Combat Team 8, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), 1st Marine Division. His unit was based out of Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, California.
On July 12, 2011, Camero was killed while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense stated his death resulted from hostile action. No further specifics regarding the incident were released in initial casualty reports.
Camero's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, Helmand province was a major center of the conflict, with U.S. and allied forces engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations against Taliban fighters.
Following his death, Camero's body was returned to Hawaii. A memorial service was held at the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery in Kailua Kona. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported that he was remembered by family and friends as a dedicated Marine who loved his home state.
Lance Corporal Camero is listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the Marine Corps. His name is also inscribed on the Hawaii Medal of Honor at the state capitol, which honors service members from Hawaii killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
