Corporal Adam Joseph Buyes, 21, of Salem, Oregon, was a U.S. Marine killed in action in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on November 26, 2011.

Their Story

Adam Joseph Buyes was a 21-year-old from Salem, Oregon. He served as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, based in Okinawa, Japan. His unit was forward-deployed to Afghanistan as part of the II Marine Expeditionary Force.

Corporal Buyes died on November 26, 2011, in Helmand province, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed while conducting combat operations. The Marine Corps stated he was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in the volatile southern region, a center of Taliban insurgency and a focus of the U.S. troop surge.

Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By late 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with a significant concentration of U.S. and allied forces in Helmand and neighboring Kandahar provinces. The mission aimed to dismantle al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban from power.

Following his death, Corporal Buyes's body was returned to the United States. His hometown of Salem held a memorial service. The Marine Corps posthumously awarded him the Purple Heart medal.

Corporal Buyes is remembered by his family and community. His name is inscribed on the Oregon Fallen War Heroes Memorial in Salem. He was survived by his parents and siblings.
