U.S. Army Private First Class Brandon Lucas Buttry, 19, of Nebraska City, Nebraska, was killed in action on November 5, 2012, in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Brandon Lucas Buttry was a 19-year-old soldier from Nebraska City, Nebraska. He was assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington.
On November 5, 2012, Buttry was killed by an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol in the Kandahar province of southern Afghanistan. He was participating in a security operation in the region at the time of the blast.
Buttry's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The conflict focused on counterinsurgency against Taliban and Al-Qaeda forces, with Kandahar province being a significant area of operations.
Following his death, Buttry's body was returned to Nebraska. A funeral service was held in Nebraska City, where he was remembered by family, friends, and members of his community. The U.S. Army posthumously awarded him the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
Buttry's name is inscribed on the Nebraska City Veterans Memorial. He is also memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and is listed on the Pentagon's casualty roster for the war.
