Sgt. William Dewitt Brown III, 44, of Franklin, North Carolina, was a U.S. Army soldier killed in action on September 19, 2013, in Gamberi, Afghanistan.
Their Story
William Dewitt Brown III was a 44-year-old sergeant from Franklin, North Carolina. He served in the U.S. Army with Company C, 94th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Polk, Louisiana. His unit deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On September 19, 2013, Brown was on a dismounted patrol in the Gamberi district of Afghanistan's Laghman province. The Department of Defense stated he was killed by enemy small-arms fire during the operation. Another soldier, Sgt. 1st Class William K. Lacey, 38, of Laurel, Mississippi, died in the same incident.
Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led international military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The mission aimed to dismantle al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban from power. By 2013, the focus had shifted to counterinsurgency and training Afghan security forces as part of a planned transition.
The Department of Defense announced the deaths on September 21, 2013. Brown was posthumously promoted to sergeant. He was survived by his wife, two children, and his parents, according to contemporary news reports.
Brown is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Macon County Courthouse in his hometown of Franklin, North Carolina. His name is also inscribed on Panel 21W, Line 106 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia.
