Board, Cody Allen
Private First Class Cody Allen Board, 19, of McKinney, Texas, was a U.S. Army infantryman killed by an IED blast in Kandahar, Afghanistan, on October 4, 2010.
Their Story
Cody Allen Board was born and raised in McKinney, Texas, a suburban city north of Dallas. He enlisted in the United States Army and, after training, was assigned as an infantryman to Alpha Company, 1st Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment. His unit was deployed to southern Afghanistan as part of Task Force Dragoon.
On October 4, 2010, Board was on a mounted patrol in Kandahar province. The Stryker vehicle he was in was struck by an improvised explosive device. He was killed in the blast. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day.
Board's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, Kandahar province was a central battleground, with coalition forces conducting major clearing operations against Taliban insurgents. The use of IEDs was a primary tactic of insurgent forces throughout the conflict.
His body was returned to the United States. A funeral service was held in McKinney, where he was buried with military honors. The city's mayor reportedly ordered flags to be flown at half-staff.
Board was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. He is memorialized on a plaque at McKinney's Veterans Memorial Park and on online veterans' memorials.
