Staff Sergeant Rayvon Battle Jr., 25, of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, was a U.S. Army combat engineer killed in action in Panjwai, Afghanistan, on November 13, 2012.

Their Story

Rayvon Battle Jr. was a 25-year-old Staff Sergeant from Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He served in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer with the 38th Engineer Company, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 7th Infantry Division, based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

On November 13, 2012, Battle was on a dismounted patrol in the Panjwai district of Kandahar province, a long-contested area in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed by enemy small arms fire during the operation.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The Panjwai district was a frequent site of insurgent activity and coalition operations throughout the conflict.

Battle was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His remains were returned to North Carolina, where he was buried with military honors.

He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and by a scholarship fund established in his name in his hometown of Rocky Mount.
